The Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute is a multidisciplinary surgical unit specializing in congenital and acquired surgical heart and lung pathology. The unit is based at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital.

Recently, cardiac transplantation and mechanical heart assist devices were added to the scope of practice.

Adult cardiac surgery as well as lung surgery for all ages is also performed at the unit. ECMO support is also offered for the critical respiratory failure patients.

The surgeons form part of a well-established interdisciplinary team consisting of paediatric and adult cardiologists, pulmonologists, paediatric intensivists, cardiac anaesthetists, microbiologists, cardiopulmonary perfusionists, physiotherapists, dieticians, speech therapists, cardiac intensive care nurses, cardiac scrub nurses and general nursing staff.
